It allows you to set the Hermes node number of which you would like to have crashmail temporarily disabled. Stop CrashMail presents a prompt to the SysOp (User #1) when logging on asking if you wish to turn off crashmail during your online session. If you answer "Yes", Stop CrashMail toggles the Accept Crashmail checkbox in the Node Prefs for that particular node. When you log off, the crashmail toggle will be turned back on.

While this is all-and-well, self-extracting archives add to the file sizes of files being transferred. DeSEA removes the overhead self-extraction code. What DeSEA does is first change the type and creator of the file to the program’s native format, rename the file from the self-extraction suffix to the native suffix, strip the resource fork of all the overhead code, and reset the finder flags. Since the compressed data is always stored in the data fork, no important data can ever be lost since the data fork is left completely intact.

America Online has always had the capability to download/upload in the background, but it forces you to do nothing else while you are downloading files anyway. To get around this, many people have been using a "Send Behind FKEY" or the like which sends the File Transfer window behind all the other windows on the screen so you can do other things such as browse messages, etc. I decided I'd rather have this capability automatically, so I wrote AOL Aid. Once AOL Aid is installed it senses when AOL's File Transfer window is on the screen.

Most Tabby utilities set the Tabby Log creator to QED1 or TABE. I decided to do something about it. Place TLC in the same folder as TabbyNet and your other Tabby utilities. Add TLC to all event chains that you want TLC to be used in. You may add TLC anywhere in the event chain, but I recommend you add it as the next to last event, immediately prior to your BBS. If you place it elsehwere in the event chain, it is likely that another utility will come along and change the creator again.

The most common need for WinterBird is with systems supporting Fido Points. (A user running Copernicus, MacWoof, or COUNTERPoint). When a TeleFinder user sends mail to a user running point software, the mail normally just sits in their mailbox. The point user actually needs to call the BBS in order to read the local mail. Winterbird forwards your mail similar to FF in Second Sight.

Validity asks the new caller for their name, address, city, state, and zip. It next asks the new caller a series of four (4) Yes/No questions. (The text of these questions is totally configurable by the SysOp.) It then asks whether the new caller is a visiting SysOp. The responses to the questions are used by Validity to grant levels of access to the Hermes BBS. For example, a visiting SysOp may be granted higher access; a caller with a 2400 baud modem or calling long distance may be given more time; a caller with a specific interest may be granted special access to a message forum.

FirstClass uses FICN resources, which are structurally identical to ICON resources but which cannot be graphically edited by ResEdit. You can change all FICN resources into equivalent ICON resources -- same name, same ID -- with FICN to ICON. Just open the application and choose the file you want to convert. To stop converting files, click the Cancel button. You can now easily edit these resources using ResEdit's ICON editor.

Just place Ghost on the desktop and drop the volume's icon on it. Ghost will launch and present you with a dialog box asking where to save. Choose that and Ghost will then create an alias of that entire drive or disc in a folder for you. You can then place the alias files in MUBBS DIRs for upload and use by the BBS. Great boon for those using System 7, BBS, and CD-ROM.

If you're using one of the new modern high-speed modems that need hardware handshaking for flow control, then you don't have any line left to control your modem's DTR line. This file contains some software in the form of a White Knight RCMD embedded in a procedure, and also in the form of some FKEYs for those of you using inferior terminal programs, along with instructions for wiring up a cable, and using this software to control your DTR line in a way that does not conflict with the use of hardware flow control. This does so by taking advantage of a little-known oddity of the Mac's serial ports, namely, that the TxD lines are tristate.

The advantages of using TFCommenter over TeleFinder/User to do this are: 1. It's very small and loads quickly. 2. It gives you a running count of how many characters you've typed in, and will prevent you from typing in more than 255 (the maximum for TeleFinder comments). 3. It works with self-extracting archives created by Compact Pro, Compctr Classic/Deluxe, and Disk Doubler. New in this version is support for Finder 7's "drag and drop" feature - select some files in the Finder, drag them over TFCommenter's icon, and they'll all be opened. With this version you can also edit the text font and size (with ResEdit), and the box in which the text appears.

If a user gets credited time, say, by chatting with you for 15 minutes, and then launches an external application, his or her credited time will be added TWICE. So say this user had an original time limit of 200, and after chatting it was temporarily raised to 215. After an external returns, the user's time limit would become 230, then 245, etc. This text file documents a way to edit a Second Sight CODE resource to fix this bug.

It should help expedite the changeover from Compctr Archives to Compactor Archives on a Second Sight BBS. What you do is this, use the sit to cpt program in batch mode to convert all your Compctr archives to Compactor archives. I have been getting a savings of 10 to 30% in size! Then run this program on each of your file sections. It will create a new file section with the same name, but .new attached to the end. This file section will be exactly the same except they will be automatically updated for the new cpt format. Check your sections afterwards. It will search for and change a string in SS File Sections and SS Menus. In the file sections it searches the Path Name of the file, and in the Menu files it searches the Optional Data field of each menu item. I created and used this program when I had to change the name of my hard disk. ChangeName makes a new copy of the File Section or Menu and renames the old one with ".old" after its name. All you need to do is have the program running under MultiFinder (on System 7), drop a *.sit or *.hqz file in the designated "input" folder and DownLine decompresses the file(s) and places them in the designated "output" folder in the background! Now you only need to use Compactor to compress file (and extract this dandy little program.). I have not had any problems running the init under System 6.0.5 and System 7. It is designed to be used to bring a new BBS up to date with messages from an older board, or to reconstruct sections from a stable board to a board which has suffered a calamity. As far as I know, it is identical in function to SuperSimulator by Mike Lininger (or whoever wrote it — I haven’t seen any authorship credit) and Sim by Bas Schulte. I wrote it for myself because I wanted to be sure that it operated the way I thought it should. Message Thing has been tested with both System 6.0.x and System 7.0. It runs fine everywhere.

It analyzes the UserLog and reports the Top Ten FreeLoaders, Uploaders or Message Posters on the BBS. (The number of ranks can be modified) A FreeLoader is defined as someone who has never uploaded a file, but has downloaded files, and has not donated money to the BBS. LoadMaster's report can be in straight ASCII text or a nice ANSI display with optional color. It determines which to use by the state of two of the caller's restriction flags. You can set which flag to use when you configure LoadMaster If you don't want the ANSI or ANSI color display, set the flag to zero.

To do this, it reads the MSGHDR file from back to front until it hits a message lower than its last recorded “high message number” or a “delivered to the BBS” date more than 10 days old. As it reads the headers, it keeps a count of active messages in each section. When it has finished with the MSGHDR, it writes a report of its findings.

Here's the author's description: Quote FKEY sole purpose is to quote text other users have written. For example, when you are reading messages from a local bulletin board system, and you want to include a portion of the other user's message, you would use this FKEY. Why not just copy the text as usual and paste? Well, most BBS and other message systems do not allow you to enter in lines equal to 80 characters, but when you read the messages they usually use 80 character lines. My FKEY neatly transforms copied text so they will fit within those shorter spaces.

Basically, this survey file makes use of the command 21 used in surveys which checks a user's download to upload ratio before continuing. I have adapted this command to form a bridge to your file sections. If the user's ratio is adequate for your standards, the user is admitted normally. If not, he or she is given a polite message explaining the situation and is forwarded to the menu I have included in this package. That menu allows the user to view files in your new upload section and to upload files (in order to boost his or her ratio). This replaces a bad upload I made on 12/26/90. Sorry about that...
SEND AN ESCAPE TeleDL AMUG CD:Files:Tele:S:SEND AN ESCAPE 0 6K 1/02/91 While it recently became possible to change Second Sight so that it would display and send a number of graphics characters in the IBM ANSI character set, until now it wasn't possible to send any of the escape sequences which allow use of cursor control, alternate character styles, and animation although most terminal packages were able to use them. This 'quick and dirty' fix will allow you to send these sequences to your users.

It scans the userlog looking for people who download multiple files without uploading in return. The program locates these users and prints out a text file containing their name, their number of downloads, and their number of uploads. It also can set one of their users flags, so that RRH menus can: prevent them from downloading, give them a special message, or whatever else the Sysop wants.

This version has some bug fixes and has added new otptions such as the ability to save old logs in a separate file by individual days or a running separate log of many files. Specifically, the sounds cause ZTerm to say "Welcome!" when a connection is made, and "File's Done" when an upload or download is complete. It works in the background under Multifinder, so you can hear what's going on when you're doing something else. It uses no extra RAM, and the sounds permanently install into ZTerm: once you have run this program you can throw it away, because the sounds are controlled by ZTerm. Note that this only works on version .85 of ZTerm. This is completely free!
